The Costa del Sol is synonymous with sandy beaches, and sun worshippers have the pick of 24 of them along Marbella’s 27km coastline. The Golden Mile encompasses five beaches, all offering excellent facilities, four of which currently have Blue Flags. Playa de la Fontanilla to the west of Marbella is a popular beach, and great for water sports; Playa Casablanca is quieter and favoured by the jet set for its chic beach clubs Trocadero Playa and Marbella Club (MC) Beach; the lovely Playa de Nagüeles, with its fine golden sand and picturesque stone pier, is where you’ll find two fabulous chiringuitos – Puente Romano and Victor’s Beach – and myriad water sports and sea-based activities to choose from; Playa Río Verde is smaller and more peaceful, located just next to the Río Verde river; and Playa Puerto Banús (also known as Playa de Levante) is a lively beach with a sheltered cove, ideal for families. The beautiful beach promenade which runs the length of the Golden Mile and beyond makes it easy to beach hop and sample the delights of the restaurants and cafés along the way.

The Golden Mile is at the heart of Marbella’s vibrant cultural scene; whether its music, theatre, art, gastronomy or sport, you can take your pick from an impressive array of local and international events held throughout the year. Art lovers can browse works from established and up-and-coming artists showcased at nearby art galleries such as Alejandro Hermann, Twisted Art, Sholeh Abghari, Sin Studio, Collection Rimon and Galería Isolina Arbulu. Don’t miss the Ralli Museum near Playa Río Verde, which holds many collections of European and Latin American art, including Spain’s own Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró, and offers a varied programme of exhibitions, talks and workshops. Nearby, you’ll find the ruins of a 1^st century Roman villa – Villa Romana de Río Verde – with its incredibly well-preserved mosaics, a must-see for ancient history enthusiasts. If you’re hungry for more Roman relics, pay a visit to the Puente Romano Beach Resort where amidst the Andalusian architecture, luxurious amenities and subtropical gardens, you can step back in time as you walk across the cobblestone Roman bridge that gives the resort its name. Cross the coastal road opposite Puente Romano to get to the Marbella Mosque (also known as the King Abdul Aziz Mosque), with its contemporary Andalusian-Arabic architecture, beautiful gardens and extensive library.

The Golden Mile is luxury boutique central, offering the best of the best in French, Italian, Spanish designer brands and more for all your shopping needs. But it’s not just the fashionistas that have the monopoly here; whether you’re into interior design, have a soft spot for the finest trinkets and timepieces, or are partial to gourmet goodies, you need look no further. And if you prefer to shop under one roof, you’re in the right place: just off the marina, there’s the biggest El Corte Inglés in Europe – 6 floors of department store heaven!

There are over 50 golf courses along the Costa del Sol and 10 of them are in Marbella. Just to the west of the Golden Mile is Nueva Andalucía – known as Golf Valley – which is home to Los Naranjos, Las Brisas and Aloha golf clubs. These championship golf courses created by world-renowned designers are considered some of the best in Europe, and their harmonious integration into the stunning Andalusian landscape, first-rate facilities, as well as a full calendar of social events and tournaments, attract both amateur and elite golfers. Here you’ll also find the only course in Spain that offers night golf at La Dama de Noche (Lady of the Night), a 9-hole course equipped with a floodlight system, designed by Enrique Canales and opened in 1991.

The Golden Mile’s sun-soaked beaches and azure waters will always seduce visitors to its shores, but the area’s natural heritage is so much more than sun, sea and sand. The stunning backdrop of the Sierra Blanca mountains and its foothills provide ample opportunities for hiking, mountain-biking, and horse-riding and many other activities in nature. It’s not all golf and water sports here. If you enjoy a spot of tennis or padel, head to Puente Romano’s internationally acclaimed club, or the Real Club Padel or Club Internacional de Tenis just northwest of Puerto Banús. And whether you’d like a gentle amble along the coast or a more ambitious walk or cycle further west, the seafront promenade – Paseo Marítimo – runs the 12km from La Bajadilla marina in Marbella to the village of San Pedro de Alcántara.

For starters, the Puente Romano Beach Resort’s 20 restaurants and bars offer some of the best dining and drinking around, so here’s a whistlestop tour of just some of them. Michelin-starred local MasterChef Dani García’s elegant brasserie BIBO excels in tapas with a twist, and his innovative steakhouse Leña will bring out the caveman or cavewoman in you. Nobu offers outstanding Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine which will astound you with its originality.
