A Guide to Sotogrande Marina

One of the jewels of Sotogrande is its stunning marina, the heart of this area’s sailing community and a wonderful place to eat, drink and shop. Since 2015, the team at Sotogrande SA has been working hard to transform the La Marina/Mercado del Levante area, to the right of the security post. Thanks to their hard work, it is now a desirable area with restaurants, bars, shops and a busy market, where people really want to go. La Marina is buzzing and very popular with residents, tourists and of course the yachting community. Have you discovered it yet?

Where is Sotogrande Marina and how do you get there?

Sotogrande Marina is under an hour by car from Marbella and less than half an hour from Gibraltar Airport. It’s easy to get to Sotogrande Marina. Use the motorway AP-7 for the fastest route and take exit 133 towards Torreguadiaro and then follow the signs for “Puerto Sotogrande”. There’s plenty of free parking on the right, just as you enter the marina complex, and also down by the water past the barrier.

When to go?

There’s always plenty of things going on in the marina, with regattas, markets and events throughout the year. On Sunday mornings we have our weekly market, with nearly 70 stalls around the marina selling a wide range of clothes, accessories, jewellery and artisan products. This is a nice time to visit, as our shops and cafes are open then too and the atmosphere is great. Our summer market is very popular and it’s a lovely place to visit at Christmas too. The cafes, restaurants and shops are open all day, so it’s a nice place to visit no matter what time of day. Choose your ideal moment!

Where to eat?

We have eight restaurants to choose from in Sotogrande Marina, offering a wide range of cuisines and styles. Try Bokana for Mediterranean, Don Diego for international fusion, Molino del Conde for rice dishes, La Quinta for Argentinian BBQ and meats and Federal Market for our gourmet market experience.

Where to shop?

Sotogrande Marina is a great place for a bit of retail therapy! As well as our weekly Sunday market, we have a wide range of shops selling everything from fashion and accessories, to gifts and homewear. There is also a beauty centre to pamper and relax you!

The Marina

Nor should we forget to mention other quality sports facilities such as Puerto Deportivo Sotogrande and Marina de Sotogrande for lovers of sailing and water sports, which has the Royal Maritime Club of Sotogrande among its excellent facilities.

The project of a marina was drawn from the beginning of the urbanization, although it would not be until July 1987 when it was inaugurated.

Since the beginning of the Urbanization of Sotogrande, the idea of building a “Little Venice” – a marina with artificial islands, to which end Sotogrande S.A. acquired the appropriate land on the left margin of the River Guadiaro Estuary.

Later at the beginning of the 90’s it was decided to build a small lake city with luxury apartments on islands and banks, which is what can be seen today in the area of the Marina de Sotogrande.

La Marina is also very well-known for it’s entertainment and nightlife as there are many fine restaurants, trendy bars and cafes, perfect located for many luxury yachts berthing there.

Important areas around Marina Sotogrande:

Sotogrande is located close to the well-renewed areas such as the famous Golden Mile, Marbella and Puerto Banús in Málaga.

San Pedro Alcántara:

It has its origin in the agricultural colony of the same name that in 1860 he founded the General Manuel Gutiérrez de la Concha and Irigoyen, first “Marqués” del Duero. Located 10 km west from the glamour of Marbella and 20km from the town of Estepona, this ancient and farming community is today an unspoiled little town with is own charm. Do not miss La Plaza de la Iglesia with is church surrounded by typical narrow Andalusian streets with little shops, cafés and bars, as same as the street market on Tuesdays popular for its large variety of locally grown fresh fruit and vegetables.

Nueva Andalucia:

Nueva Andalucía is a short walk from the beaches from Puerto Banús. It is located in the center-west of the municipal district, between the center of Marbella and the district of San Pedro Alcántara. The district encompasses an area of luxury villas and apartments designed in the traditional Andalusian style among large golf courses. This area was developed for those people who wished to be based in a calm and residential area, enjoy tranquility, living in a beautiful urbanization surrounded by gardens, swimming pools, supermarkets, sports facilities, hairdressers, gymnasiums... All the facilities of a town but located on a residential area to ensure an incomparable quality of life. Ronda is one of the most beautiful villages in the Spanish province of Málaga in Andalusia, which retains much of its historic charm. With a population of about 35,000 inhabitants, its not only one of the most beautiful but also from the most visited villages of the area. The place where Spanish history and traditions come together.

Conil:

Once a town whose wealth was based on the tuna fishing industry, Conil de la Frontera, on the Atlantic coast of Cadiz, has had to turn to tourism to survive. It was soon ‘discovered’ by the Spanish tourists from Seville and Huelva and its population now quadruples in summer from 23,000 to over 100,000 people. Spring and autumn are the best times to discover Conil; all the restaurants, shops and bars are open and the Spanish tourists are thin on the ground. Conil de la Frontera is a charming Spanish fishing town and resort.

Gibraltar:

Rising up as an indomitable peak at the gateway between Spain and the African coast, Gibraltar is a unique destination with a life that goes beyond its surface. The monolithic Rock of Gibraltar entices tourists with its lush greenery and the friendly Barbary Macaques ubiquitous to the area. Beneath its looming exterior lay the Galleries, a veritable labyrinth of underground passageways running through the Rock. Above ground there is also plentiful tax-free shopping, as well as numerous beaches.

Golden Mile:

The best hotels close to Puerto Banús, expensive properties, exclusive shops and high end restaurants. This is one of the most luxurious residential areas in Marbella, ideally located along the Mediterranean coast. Prince Alfonso con Hohenlohe was the one opening the Marbella Club Hotel in 1954 from since them the high-end society stared buying fabulous properties in that area nowadays know as the Golden Mile.

Old Town, Casco Antiguo:

This area includes the ancient city walls and two historical suburbs, Barrio alto (north) and Barrio Nuevo (east). Whats impressive is the ancient walled city which retains nearly the same layout as in the 16th century. The most iconic square in the old town of Marbella is la Plaza de los Naranjos, an example of Castilian Renaissance design. Around the square the are more Renaissance style buildings as the Catholic Monarch but in 1568 and the Mayor’s house that combines both gothic and renaissance style elements in it’s façade; and the Chapel of Santiago, the oldest religious building in the city, built earlier than the square probably around 15th century.

Tarifa:

Tarifa is the place where two seas crash to each other to offer their visitors and residents unique experiences, this Spanish municipality of the province of Cádiz, is located at the most southern point of Europe and closest to the coasts of Africa. Tarifa is one of the Andalusian towns with the greatest tourist projection, becoming the kingdom of windsurfing. The weather and the wind are ideal to enjoy the best sports experiences.

The image of this white walled village makes travelers fall in love. Vejer de la Frontera is one of those destinations where you risk running out of memory in your camera very fast. There are many attractions that are hidden, but we have chosen these for your unforgettable visit.
